Preliminary Narrative for Assignment 2

Everything is vague before my eyes. Behind a veil of shimmering mist gracefully dancing with the gentle zephyr, I can make out a feathered silhouette of an ambiguous structure. But as the breeze strengthens, the mystic curtain lifts and folds as the vista slowly opens up before my eyes. I find myself gazing at a hallowed piece of architecture, standing on a concrete platform, as muted and as still as the dead water that surrounds it. But as I close my eyes, I can hear its voice, sobbing and mourning in solitude. It must be a derelict warehouse. With a grey sky solemnly looming behind, pillars of light pierces through the dense layers of cloud and gently caresses the roof as if giving solace to the building. The façade is in a ruinous condition, starring back at the sky with sunken eyes and a petrified face filled with pain. The timber door is falling apart; windows are shattered while the brickwork is weathered by the ravages of relentless time and merciless nature. As I put on hands over the chilled, rusting door knobs and pulled open the shaking doors, an odour of decay instantly pours out. Beams of light softly illuminates the interior as if they are spirits of the past, desperately searching for their lost memories. Although there is no longer any sign of human occupation, piles of rubble and carcasses of machinery look as though they want to speak. Glisteningly gently, thick wisps of stagnant dust are like ghosts of the remnants, singing a requiem to their forgotten histories.

Assignment 1: 7 Urban 'Memory-scape' Narratives

Sands of memory.. dust of urban memoryscapes..

Contrived and contested memories...

Barren urban landscapes summons forgotten memories...

Fragility of urban memories... what is left when all is demolished?

The more urban memories are erased, the more we reminisce..

As urban fabric becomes annihilated, associated memories perish along with it...

urban landscapes with retained remnants of the past... tension between the past, present and future strengthens as time seem to compress

Experimental Video 2: Array of Satin Cloth

The Cloth Modifier allowed me to do this will minimal effort. I think the video would have been better if I used better lighting, but the subtly and gloominess isn't so bad. Not sure why the back side of the cloth is of a different colour... I also think that if each piece had a slightly different flow, it will make it more realistic (At the moment they all have the same movement)

Experimental Video 1: The Bouncing Ball

This is my first video with 3DStudioMax. I would have liked the video to have dramatic lighting to compliment the low-angle shot. Otherwise, I think I have learnt a lot from this exercise. Creating a simple video like a bouncing ball wasn't as easy as I anticipated...

Concept of "SET"

On one level, the 15 images can be interpreted as having the common denominator of illustrating dilapidation, which binds them together as a 'set'. However, on another deeper level, these are voices of collective memories, which are often fragmented and discordant.[1] Recognising this, photographs as a vehicle of representing memory, may take on a variety of meaning and associations even if they capture similar spaces, objects and/or people. Thus, the concept is to treat my 15 photos as a landscape of memories, linked and compressed by a series of abstract movements and objects as a metaphor for the conjured nature of 'memory-scapes'. This will ultimately bind them together as a "set" of images. Such treatment has been inspired by the notion of “hypertext”; defined by Jennifer Bloomer as a “reproduc[tion of] the workings of the mind… The sense of fragmentation is compensated by the connectivity – the possibility of establishing multiple links between different spaces.”[2]  This is essentially an experiment with digital media and technology that introduces Ali Rahim’s notion of “systemic delay”[3] in the architectural design process of heritage intervention. The animation can be read as a diagram that addresses connections (and disjunctions) of memories which leads to the generation of a material form.
